How do I declutter and organize my home office?

One of the most crucial aspects of cleaning and keeping your home office clean is to declutter it. Just like anyone who homeschools their children know, keeping a clutter free desk space and office will go a long way to having a more pleasant space to work, as well as making cleaning it much easier. If you are working in an overly cluttered space, it can cause you to be inefficient and distracted. To get started with decluttering your office, use the following tips to help:

  • Put away any food dishes and drink glasses to where they belong after use
  • Recycle extra papers, notes, and envelopes when they are no longer needed
    • You can shred sensitive documents
    • You can scan in or take a picture of documents that need to be saved to your computer to reduce paper clutter
  • Use filing cabinets and other storage bins for documents and other items that need to be kept
    • Within the cabinets, use folders to organize your papers
  • Get in a habit of cleaning your desk space at the end of each day
    • This will help to alleviate clutter buildup over time, and it is nice to start each work day with a clean and organized desk space
  • Keep cords, cables, and other electronics neatly organized
    • If you don’t consistently use an electronic, find a place to store it so it is out of the way, and not collecting excess dust

How long will it take to clean my home office weekly?

There is no definitive answer to this question, but once you declutter your office space, and get in a consistent cleaning routine, it can take as little as 10 extra minutes per week.

Factors that will impact cleaning time include:

  • The size of your office space. For a small room with only a desk and computer, cleaning can take just a few minutes if you keep up with it.
  • The amount of use your home office space gets. If you work at home with a partner, and perhaps a couple pets, the space will be a little tougher to clean, as pet hair and clutter will build up quicker.
  • The climate that you live in may affect the level of effort required to clean your home office. If you live in a humid environment, consider running a dehumidifier to help reduce moisture buildup in the room. If you live in a dry environment and you keep your windows open frequently, then you will likely have to deal with heavier and more frequent dusting.

For a standard home office space, a weekly cleaning should be a relatively easy task with some basic cleaning equipment. To get started, grab some microfiber cloths, a high duster if you have one (this is key for ceiling fans and high walled rooms), an all purpose spray of your choice, and a vacuum and mop, depending on your floor surface.

Once you have your supplies together, you generally will want to start with high dusting of the room. If you haven’t dusted for a while, there may be a lot of debris falling down. Don’t worry about it, as you will get it cleaned up once it is all on the floor. Make sure to dust corners and edges of the ceiling, as well as the fan blades. In addition, pay attention to monitors and electronics throughout the room that have a tendency to accumulate lots of dust.

Once you have finished dusting, you can begin the wet wiping of the room. Depending on the state of the fan blades (and their height), you may want to wet wipe them using a step stool. Use your all purpose solution and microfiber cloths, and wet wipe around the room, looking out for light switches and your desktop. This is also a good time to do a thorough cleaning of your baseboards, which may require some extra scrubbing.

After you have wet wiped the room, you can move onto the floors. Any dust and debris from before should now be on the ground. If the room is carpeted, simply vacuum throughout the room, focusing on the edges of the room. If you have a hard surface, use your vacuum to get up all the dust and debris to prep the floor for mopping. Most floor surfaces will be safe to clean with your all purpose cleaner, but if you have a special surface or hardwood, you may want to use a floor specific cleaner to mop. When mopping, make sure to use as little moisture as possible to not damage the floor or cause streaking.

How can I clean my office really fast?

The best way to clean your home office quickly is to do it consistently! The more often you clean, the easier it will be. Additionally, you will become a more efficient cleaner in the process. Keeping clutter to a minimum will also help speed up the cleaning. This will allow you to move around your desk and room much quicker, as there won’t be things in the way.

Because not too much equipment is needed to clean your office space, you can leave a spray bottle and some rags in the room. With this, you can do most of the cleaning without having to leave the room to gather supplies. This will not just save time, but will make one less barrier in the way to keep clean.
