How can I easily clean my dishwasher filter?

While there are a few steps to cleaning a dishwasher, this post will just focus on cleaning the dishwasher filter. Like other details in kitchen cleaning, such as making sure that your kitchen cabinet handles stay clean, keeping the dishwasher filter clean will help to contribute to the overall cleanliness and efficient functioning of your kitchen area and all of the associated appliances.

The dishwasher filter helps to filter out food, debris and grease during the dishwashing cycle so that it does not get redeposited onto dishes once they have been cleaned off. Cleaning the filter will help to ensure that dishes come out of the dishwashing cycle as clean as possible.

To easily and quickly clean your dishwasher filter, simply follow these steps:

  • Prepare a cleaning solution in a sink or large bowl.
    • The best solution is hot water mixed with some dish soap.
  • Locate and remove the dishwasher filter from the appliance.
    • These filters are usually located on the bottom of the dishwasher, so it is easier to remove if you take off the bottom dish rack.
  • Let the filter sit in the solution for a few minutes.
  • Scrub the filter with a brush or sponge to get any debris off of it.
    • You can also use the brush or sponge to wipe out the filter holder inside of the dishwasher.
  • Rinse the filter in hot water to get any soap or left over grime and debris out of it.
  • Put the filter back into place.

How long will it take to clean the filter?

As with so many things related to home cleaning, this will depend on several factors. For a dishwasher and dishwasher filter that has been consistently cleaned, this should only take a few minutes of time. If the dishwasher and filter have not been cleaned for a long time, the whole process will require some extra elbow grease and scrubbing, and could also take a bit longer of soaking in the hot soapy water solution.

How often should the dishwasher filter be cleaned?

The frequency of cleaning your dishwasher filter will depend on how often the dishwasher is used, as well as how dirty the dishes are when they are put in the washer. While many new dishwashers are powerful enough to remove stuck on grease, food, and grime, that debris needs to go somewhere, and will be harder on the filter.

Pre-rinsing your dishes will help to ease the burden of the dishwasher filter, making it stay cleaner for longer.

A general rule of thumb is to try to clean the filter on a monthly basis, or anytime that you find that the dishwasher is not doing as good of a job to remove debris and grease off of your dishes.
