What is an easy grill cleaning process?

Cleaning an outdoor grill does not need to be an overwhelming task, especially when using the right tools such as a Scrub Daddy or metal wire brush. Similar to cleaning your stovetop, you will need an all purpose spray and a degreaser, as well as a heavy duty brush, scrubber, and/or microfiber cloth.

You can follow this simple grill cleaning routine to get the most out of your cleaning efforts. This cleaning routine is best done when the grill is warm after use (be careful to make sure it has thoroughly cooled to a manageable temperature for cleaning after use):

  • Remove any ash or coals from charcoal grills. You may be able to use a shop vac for this task, or you may be able to simply hose down the grill.
  • Use a stiff wire brush to scrub and work the grill grates. You can add a degreaser to the grates to help soak through the buildup.
  • Apply vegetable oil to the grates with a microfiber cloth or paper towel. This will help to prevent rust and food buildup in the future.
  • Use an all purpose spray, mild dish soap and water, or a degreaser to clean other accessories and the interior of the grill. A microfiber cloth may be sufficient depending on the state of the grill, or you may need to use a heavier duty scrubber such as a Scrub Daddy, or your hard wire brush.
  • Finish up your cleaning by wiping and scrubbing the exterior of the grill. Depending on the material, you may not want to use a hard wire brush as it could scratch the stainless steel exterior. Like the interior, you can use an all purpose spray, dish soap and water, or a degreaser depending on the condition of the exterior.
  • Make sure to thoroughly dry the grill afterwards to prevent any rusting.

While cleaning, make sure to look out for other details, such as cleaning of the burner knobs or other grates and accessories. You can also look for grill specific cleaning solutions in the store.

How long will it typically take to clean my grill?

Like so many things in cleaning, this answer depends on a couple different factors.

These factors to consider include:

  • The current state of the grill. When was the last time it was cleaned and how messy is the cooking being done on it?
  • How consistently the grill is cleaned. For a grill that is cleaned after each use, it may take just a couple extra minutes to wipe it down. If you are not in a good grill cleaning routine, it could take 20-30 minutes of scrubbing and detailed cleaning to get it into a better state.

If you can get into the habit of cleaning your grill after each use, it will not turn into a dreaded high effort chore on your to do list.
