How can I easily clean my house fans?

Whether your home is equipped with ceiling fans, stand alone fans, or a combination of both, the cleaning process will be similar. The main cleaning challenge that you will be dealing with is accumulated dust and debris on the fan blades. If you are looking for information on cleaning your air conditioner instead of your fan, you can read all about our simple air conditioner cleaning guide.

To get started with fan cleaning, start by gathering up some basic cleaning supplies, including microfiber cloths, all purpose spray, and a high duster if you have one.

Once you have your tools, use the following steps to start cleaning your fans.

  • Start by unplugging your stand alone fans, or turning off your ceiling fan.
  • Disassemble your fan cover so that the blades are exposed.
  • For ceiling fans, you may simply be able to use a high duster to dust and knock off all of the debris from the fan blades. Make sure to do this before cleaning anything else in the room, as the dust and debris will fall to the ground or onto other surfaces.
  • For regular fan blades, depending on the buildup, you may be able to simply dry dust them clean. If they are in rougher shape, you will need to use your all purpose spray and wet wipe each blade.
  • If the ceiling fan blades are also in rough shape, grab a step ladder to reach the fan blades. Use an all purpose spray and microfiber cloth to wet wipe and scrub the blades clean.
  • For either type of fan, once the blades are clean, you should make sure to dust and wipe the exterior. This will include any light fixture attached to the ceiling fan, or the operating panel and exterior of your stand alone fan.
  • Make sure everything is wiped dry and clean before reassembling any parts of the fans.

How long does it take to clean fans?

Luckily, cleaning fans is a pretty easy task, and even the dirtiest and most neglected fans will be pretty easy to clean.

But as with anything in cleaning, the current state of the fan will determine the effort level.

  • How many fans you have throughout the home is the biggest factor in how long this task will take. While each fan may be relatively quick to clean, if you have multiple ceiling or stand alone fans scattered throughout the home, it will definitely take longer.
  • The current state of each fan. A fan that can be quickly dry dusted will be much easier to deal with than a fan with caked on dust, debris, and grime.

How can I speed up the process?

Like with anything in cleaning, the best way to speed up the cleaning process is to do it more often! The more you clean, the better and more efficient you will be at it. Additionally, the more often something like a fan is cleaned, the less grimy it will be. This will make the cleaning job that much simpler!
