ice cubesMany people do not realize how difficult it can be to find a high quality move out cleaning service in Windsor before it is too late. Not only will a great move out cleaning help your home to show better for a sale or help you get your full security deposit back, but it will also take a huge load of stress off of you during the already difficult time of moving.

To help ensure that your home is as clean as can be when you move out of it, performing a full move out cleaning will be crucial. While we have covered a great deal about these types of cleanings in the past, today’s post will go over one of the finer details to take into consideration. This is making sure that your freezer ice maker is clean, which is helpful whether you are moving out of your home or not.

Why is it a good practice to routinely clean your ice maker?

Ice makers are great additions to refrigerators, giving a convenient and consistent supply of ice to your household. Unfortunately, like most things in your kitchen, it will require cleaning from time to time to work optimally.

In locations that have hard water or extra minerals in the water, the ice maker has a tendency to build up mineral deposits, making it work inefficiently. Additionally, bacteria and other gunk can build up which can affect the taste and quality of your ice.

You should aim to clean your ice maker at least every 6 months, and even monthly, if you live in an area with harder water or high humidity. Keep an eye on the quality of your ice, and perform a deep cleaning of your ice maker anytime you notice a decrease in quality and freshness of your ice.

What supplies will I need to clean my ice maker?

To fully clean your ice maker, you will just need some basic supplies. Depending on what you prefer to clean with, and what you currently have available, gather the following supplies:

  • Dish soap or vinegar
  • Baking soda for additional scrubbing power
  • Toothbrush or small scrub brush
  • Sponge or microfiber cloth

How do I clean my ice maker?

To get started cleaning your ice maker, start off by unplugging your ice maker or refrigerator. After that, follow these steps for a full deep ice maker cleaning:

  • Remove all the ice from the machine, and drain any water that is left inside
  • Clean any parts of the machine that are removable
    • You can clean these in a warm soapy water solution in your sink, or an equal part vinegar to water mixture
    • Use a sponge or microfiber cloth to clean the surfaces, and a toothbrush or small scrub brush for corners and edges
  • Clean the interior of the ice machine
    • You can use the same solution and tools as you did for the removable parts
    • You can add baking soda to your solution if there is stubborn grime or hard water deposits that are not coming clean
  • Check your ice maker or refrigerator water filter
    • Periodically changing this filter will ensure that your water and ice is as clean as possible for drinking
  • Run an ice making cycle with a one to one vinegar to water mixture
    • You may be able to buy a specific ice maker cleaning solution for this purpose
    • Pour the solution into the reservoir, and remove the ice once it has been made
    • Some ice makers will have a cleaning cycle that you can use for this step
    • Run an extra cycle if there is still vinegar residue left over
    • Rinse out the reservoir afterwards before making a fresh batch of ice
