Why is it important to keep kitchen cabinets clean?

Here at the Mulberry Maids blog, we love to provide you tips on all aspects of home cleaning and organizing, from keeping your home in shape in between cleaning services and preparing for cleaners when working and teaching your kids from home, to the importance of a professional move out cleaning.

Today we are going to talk about the importance of cleaning and maintaining your kitchen cabinets.

Keeping your kitchen cabinets clean is important for the following reasons:

  • Protecting the finish on the cabinets
  • Making kitchen cleaning quicker and more efficient
  • Cuts down on trapped dust in your kitchen
  • Keep your cabinets from developing a sticky residue that can not be removed
  • Create a pristine environment in your kitchen

What should I clean my cabinets with?

Cleaning your kitchen cabinets does not require anything harsh or special and you can make an effective solution from normal household cleaning products.  You can simply use a general and mild all purpose cleaner, or make your own solution with hot water and either dish soap or distilled white vinegar.  It is important to not use anything too abrasive or strong, as it can damage the finish on your cabinets.

For caked on grease, food splatter or other stains that will not come off with a normal cleaning solution, reach for the baking soda.  The mild abrasive properties of baking soda can help to lift these stains, while remaining gentle on the finish.  Mix one part baking soda to two parts water.  Let this mixture sit for a few minutes, and wipe away from the surface.

Steps to clean your cabinets:

  • Spray your solution onto the cabinet and wipe away with a microfiber cloth
  • Let the baking soda mixture sit for a few minutes on tough areas, then wipe it away
  • Go over the cabinets with only water to make sure all the solution is removed
  • Dry the cabinets so there is no water damage after cleaning them
  • Use a toothbrush to get into tight grooves as needed
  • Be careful on metal hinges as water left on metal can lead to rusting

How often should I clean my kitchen cabinets?

As with any cleaning throughout a home, consistency is key.  You should aim to clean your cabinets at least once a month, but every other week is better.  A good practice is to do a quick wipe down of the cabinets around the stove and sink every couple days, as these areas will collect more food splatter quicker than other areas.  The sooner this is wiped off, the less likely it will be to dry and harden on, making a full cabinet cleaning a much easier process.

It is also a great idea to do a full deep cabinet cleaning twice a year.  This cleaning will be more than a surficial wipe down of the cabinets, and will include a full cleaning of the interior cabinets in the kitchen.  Additionally, it will be a good time to work on any lingering stains, and getting deeper into the grooves with a toothbrush.

To clean the interior of the cabinets, you will need to empty everything out of them, then either wipe out any debris and crumbs with a rag or use a hand held vacuum extension to vacuum them out.  Once the debris is out, use the same solution that you use for the exterior cabinets, and follow the same cleaning process for the interior cabinets as you would use on the exterior of the cabinets.
