How to Clean Your Laundry Room to Perfection

A very clean and well maintained laundry room

While certain areas of the home get all the attention for routine and deep cleaning, the laundry room should not be forgotten. Skipping out on this important area is not recommended as it is where you wash and fold your nicely cleaned clothes. Luckily, cleaning this area is not a daunting task, and can be performed rather quickly.

Learn more about what one of the best house cleaning services in Loveland Colorado recommends. These tips and tricks will help you keep your laundry consistently clean without taking up too much of your time.

How do I develop a routine for cleaning my laundry room?

Here at Mulberry Maids, we love writing all about developing routines to clean areas of your home like living rooms, figuring out effective ways to perform your own move out cleaning, and how to handwash certain articles of clothing, and are excited to continue this trend to help you develop a laundry room cleaning routine.  To get started on the often neglected laundry room cleaning, try to implement the following tips.

Start out by dusting from top to bottom

Depending where the laundry room is in your home, and when the last time it was actually cleaned, there could be copious amounts of dust that has accumulated.  While even the most steadfast homemakers will keep the whole home cleaned, the laundry room is often overlooked.  Start off by giving the area a thorough dusting, from top to bottom, and vacuuming up all the dust that hits the floor.

Wet wipe the room

Once you have done a good dry dusting, it is time to wet wipe the room.  Given that clean clothes are folded and transported out of this room, it is a good idea to use a disinfectant all purpose spray to clean.  Make sure to hit the following areas:

  • Doorknobs
  • Switches
  • Shelves
  • Handles and faucets
  • Counters and table tops
  • Cabinets
  • Drawer pulls

When cleaning these areas, use your disinfectant spray and a microfiber cloth. Work from one side of the surface to the other in order to avoid recontamination.

Clean the sink and faucet

If you have a sink and faucet, clean them using your disinfectant as you would in a bathroom or kitchen.  If there is a lot of soap scum buildup, try to use vinegar and baking soda as a natural way to scrub it away.

Don’t forget the washing machine and dryer!

To clean the outside and inside of your machines, follow these steps:

  • Remove any knobs or controls and wash them in your sink.  Additionally, you can spray disinfectant on them.
  • Wipe down the exterior of the machines with your all purpose or disinfecting spray, and dry the surface with a microfiber cloth.
  • Try to move the machines to clean the floors behind the machines.
  • Take out any pieces from the interior of the machines, such as soap dishes, to clean in your sink.
  • Remove any debris from inside the machines.
  • Use a vinegar solution with a microfiber cloth and a small brush (toothbrush works great!) to clean and scrub interior surfaces, crevices, and edges inside the machines.
  • Always let your washing machine air out after each use by leaving the machine door open if possible.

Finish with floors

As with any room in your home, the floors should be done last.  Do a thorough sweep or vacuum, then finish up with a mopping of the floors, using an appropriate floor cleaner based on the type of flooring you have in your laundry room.

How often should I clean the laundry room?

The answer to this question will depend on how frequently the room is used, and even where the room is located.  A good rule of thumb is to do a quick wipe down of the room twice a month, after you perform the more thorough initial deep cleaning of the area.

If you can get into a routing incorporating all the above tips, you should be able to clean the room relatively quickly, likely in under 10 minutes.  The more consistently you run through a simple routine, the quicker it will be.
