How to Clean Your Mattress

The health of your mattress is much more than just the comfortable feeling it provides you.  Like so many other household items, your mattress needs regular cleaning. Dust mites, allergens, dead skin cells, and food, just to name a few, can be lurking in and around your mattress.  Proper maintenance is more than just washing your sheets and a quick vacuum over the top of the mattress. Read on for tips for a solid mattress cleaning.

You should first start by washing your sheets, mattress pad, and bedspread using the hottest washer and dryer settings possible.  Next, perform a thorough vacuuming of the mattress tops and sides to remove particles from the bed.

Once vacuuming is done, you should check for any stains on the mattress.  These can be tackled with a variety of methods, pick your favorite stain removing agents for the job.  One easy solution is to make a lemon juice and salt mixture. This can be applied to the stain, and let sit for up to an hour.  Wipe up the excess salt from the mattress when it is finished.

The next step is to deodorize the mattress with baking soda.  Sprinkle baking soda throughout the mattress and let it sit for a couple hours.  This will help to absorb odors and moisture that are stored in the mattress. After a couple hours, vacuum the mattress again.

Now it is time to repeat this process, but on the other side of the mattress.  Flipping a mattress every few months (or rotating a pillow top mattress) is a good habit to be in for the care of your mattress and your personal health.  Once the procedure is complete on both sides of the mattress, if you have the option, you should let the mattress air out outside before making your bed again.

In addition to proper care, a new mattress cover can help keep the mattress cleaner for longer.  Get a cover that can be easily thrown in the washer and dryer for quick cleaning, so you don’t have to repeat the mattress cleaning task as often!
