Read on to learn more about decluttering and simplifying your home cleaning kit!

Why is a simple cleaning kit better?

Whether you are a professional cleaner or just looking to keep your house in better shape more consistently, having a simple cleaning kit will make the job easier. From using less product on the surfaces that you are cleaning to having a more organized kit, less is usually more in home cleaning.

One of the biggest advantages of having a simple and decluttered cleaning kit is that it makes getting ready to clean much easier, and it makes cleaning more efficient. If you are cleaning a whole home, the simpler and smaller your kit is, the easier it is to move from room to room.

Simplicity in your cleaning solutions works in a similar way. The less spray bottles you have, the quicker you can move around. In general, you can clean most of a home with an all purpose spray, or if you are doing a house wide disinfecting cleaning, you can use an all purpose sanitizing spray on most surfaces.

What are some tips to help declutter my cleaning supplies?

Trimming down your cleaning kit will pay off in more efficient cleaning, saving you time and energy. The first thing to consider is what type of home you are cleaning. For small homes with low ceilings, you won’t need many special tools. For example, you don’t need to lug around a large extendable duster or a small step ladder. If you have high ceilings and fans throughout the home, you will want to keep these in your kit.

Another factor to consider are the surfaces that you are cleaning. If you do not have any special care surfaces throughout the home, such as hardwood floors or natural stone countertops, you can use an all purpose spray on the majority of your home. If this is the case, you can likely just have one spray bottle to tackle the whole home in an efficient manner. For homes that are in need of a heavier deep cleaning, you may need to have a degreaser with you for harder scrubbing.

Some tips to help simplify and declutter your kit include:

  • Try to get down to one spray bottle of solution that can be used throughout the majority of your home.
  • Get a small tote bag that can be easily moved from room to room with your supplies.
    • If you can not fit everything into a small tote bag, you likely need to keep working on decluttering your cleaning kit.
  • Find a type of sponge and brush that you like, and get rid of old ones that take up space.
    • The majority of a home can be cleaned with a microfiber cloth and an all purpose spray.
  • Make sure any vacuum attachments fit on your vacuum.
    • Extra attachments will likely not be used, and will take up space in your tote bag.
  • Keep specific room supplies in that room.
    • For example, keep bathroom cleaning supplies in the bathroom, so they don’t need to be moved around from room to room with other general cleaning items.

What is an example of a simple cleaning kit?

A simple cleaning kit should be just that – simple! There is no reason to carry around more than necessary in your kit while you are cleaning.

An example simple cleaning kit for a normal home could include the following:

  • 1 spray bottle of all purpose cleaner
    • It is best to use concentrate to mix your all purpose spray, and the concentrate can be set aside so it is not in the way when cleaning.
  • Microfiber cloths
    • The amount needed will depend on how big of a home that is being cleaned, and the state of the home. Generally speaking 10-20 small cloths will be sufficient to clean a home.
  • Sponges and brushes
    • Sponges and brushes can be handy in addition to microfiber cloths, but depending on the surfaces in your home, and how dirty it is, you may or may not need them each time you clean.
  • Duster
  • Dish soap
    • This can be handy to use on sensitive surfaces, such as natural stone counters.
  • Vacuum and broom
  • Mop
    • A simple pole with a microfiber mop head will be sufficient for most floors. The advantage of this type of system is that it is quick to use, and you can use your all purpose spray with this mop system.

Other things that you may want to rotate into your kit depending on your cleaning goals for the day may include window cleaner (you won’t clean windows too often) or disinfectant (you don’t need to sanitize your home everytime you clean). By keeping extra items out of your tote, you can move around the home easier, and find what you are looking for quicker. Additionally, you will likely want a degreaser or other abrasive cleanser on hand for when you need to scrub away mildew, soap scum, or grease. These are all best stored away and taken out when needed, which will make the cleaning process simpler the majority of the time.
