What are the best products to use on my windows?

There are many glass cleaning products on the market, all promising streak free results. Just like doing your dishes by hand, sometimes the easiest solution is to use a homemade glass cleaner, which consists of the following:

  • 2 cups distilled water
  • 2 tablespoons of cleaning vinegar
  • A few drops of any essential oil (to mask the vinegar smell)

There are many other great do it yourself glass cleaners to try without using vinegar. One that is slightly more complicated to use is the following in a 32 ounce spray bottle:

  • 1 oz of soapy ammonia (5 teaspoons water, 2 teaspoons ammonia, 1 teaspoon dish soap)
  • 4 oz of rubbing alcohol
  • 3 â…“ cups of water

If you don’t have the time to make your own solution, you can buy a variety of window cleaners in the store or online. Many of these store bought products will either have vinegar or ammonia in them, like the homemade versions. You can usually find concentrate online as well, which will last much longer, and just require you to mix it in with water in a spray bottle.

How should I clean the glass?

There are many types of rags and products to use when cleaning glass, but the most important thing is to use a lint free microfiber cloth or even a paper towel. You should also spray your solution onto your rag, so there is no excess solution on the window or mirror.

Tips to consider include:

  • Never use a razor or anything sharp on the window to get things off that are stuck on the glass. First try to use vinegar on it to try and dissolve the stuck on mess enough to be able to wipe it away with a cloth.
  • If you still have streaks, go over the window again with plain water to help remove the excess streaks and product. Over-applying the cleaning solution will make it more likely to end up with streaks.
  • Don’t forget the window tracks, as you can not have truly clean windows unless the tracks are clean.

How should I clean the window tracks and frame?

While the window tracks are not as sensitive as cleaning the glass, the tracks can be a pretty tough job. You should start out by vacuuming them with a hand held attachment, to pick up any loose dirt and debris. If they have not been cleaned for a long time, you can start by sprinkling baking soda on them, and spray them down with vinegar. This will help to loosen up dirt and grime in the track, making it easier to clean.

Depending on the size of the tracks and how tough the job is, you may be able to use a toothbrush to get them cleaned up, or simply a microfiber cloth with your hands.

The window frames should not be ignored either, and can simply be cleaned with an all purpose spray and microfiber cloth. Make sure to get the windowsill and the small ledge on the top part of the frame, as that area can collect lots of dust and debris.
